The high arches and heavy panels made for a tricky installation which was worth the final result; an open feel with plenty of character. Internal structures were all machine cut to create archways and alcoves for clothing displays and change rooms.
Our team ensured they invested the time to select and manufacture components, to alleviate any issues with onsite assembly and completion.

MECCA,
FLAGSHIP STORE, GOWINGS SYDNEY CBD
Location/
Cnr George & Market Streets, Sydney CBD
Size/
1800 m²
Completed/
November 2020
Designed by/

This is MECCA Brand's first flagship store and the largest beauty store of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Situated over the four levels in the Iconic The Gowings Building, the store is right in the heart of Sydney's CBD. Over 200 beauty brands are catered for in this stunning fitout. A third of the store has been dedicated to Beauty Services, including a Mecca Skin Lab, Brow Lab, Beauty Lab, piercing and bracelet soldering and a hair salon.
There are many stunning features in this retail fitout designed by Jules Meacham and Bruce Nockles.
The ground floor space was opened up to reveal its natural beauty allowing light to flow into the space from the shopfront windows, which were previously closed off. Part of the first floor was removed to allow light to filter between the levels and make the journey more enticing.
A new dumb waiter was installed between the four levels, which was fully encased in glass, so the bright red operating mechanism and carriage was visible as part of the theatre of the fitout. There are five handcrafted glass chandlers throughout the retail space. However, the most eye-catching element is the 120m2 paillette ceiling to draw your attention from the QVB entry. With over 30,000 Paillette plates hanging from an illuminated ceiling, the effect is very dramatic.
Barrisol ceilings were used on 2 of the three levels with specifically designed service troughs to cater for AC, sprinklers and lighting. Between the Barrisol, the ceiling was left open to showcase the building heritage and beautiful details.
The design and materials had to be consistent with the building's architectural form in keeping with the City's Conservation Policy due to this building's heritage listing. This included the preservation of the sandstone shopfront and all internal stairwells and original lifts.
By far the largest project ever for Alexander Interiors, our Project Managers, Site Installers, and contractors worked tirelessly through the Covid pandemic to complete this fitout in readiness for opening on 27 November 2020.
